Letter from Puerto Rico

corsetsThe Summit Herald of November 19, 1898 published a letter from Summit resident Francis Lawton, stationed in Puerto Rico during the Spanish American War. Lawton described exploring the dark, secret passageways of Morro Castle after its capture from the Spanish. The Summit Bowling Club played against a Newark team on the alleys of the Hotel Beechwood, defeating them 2-1. Cables for the New York and New Jersey Telephone Co. were delivered to be laid underground on Maple Street.
