The Summit Record of February 18, 1916 reported that Council discussed the problem of delinquent taxpayers. Most of the offenders had neglected to pay the $1 poll tax owed by every adult male resident. The Summit High School basketball team defeated Dover 25-22, but the debate team lost to Chatham 1-2. Labor agitator Mother Jones, “the most hated and most loved” woman in America, was scheduled to lecture at All Soul’s Church in Summit. The Summit Library announced a new exhibit to open on Washington’s Birthday, commemorating 100 years of peace between the U.S. and Great Britain. Locals wanting to escape the northern winter could book a round-trip passage on a steamer ship to Jacksonville, Florida for $43.30, or take a 16-day cruise to tropical Porto Rico for $94.50.
