From the Director - June 2013

director chair newsletterThe cicadas are humming and so are things at the Summit Free Public Library. The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that the library will be remaining open until 9:00 pm on Thursday evenings starting July 11th. This will increase library service to four evenings a week giving you plenty of time to pick up your summer reading, movies and music on your way home from the Family Aquatic Center. And there is more good news for September when Sunday hours will be restored. Watch for our big grand re-opening with programs for adults and kids planned for Sunday, September 8th!

Every library needs Friends! The Summit Free Public Library is seeking a core group of people willing to help re-organize the library’s long-dormant Friends of the Library group. Friends of the Library groups are a fundamental element of library service all across the United States. Friends are community members who value the service of libraries and volunteer to help them.

They provide an essential link between citizens and their libraries.

While the Friends group may advocate for the library to elected officials and the community, the primary role of the Friends of the Library is to provide additional money for library materials, equipment, programs and/or services from funds received through payment of membership dues and fundraising activities.

Help maintain and improve the services of the Summit Free Public Library by becoming an active member of the new Friends of the Library. Join us for an organizational meeting on Monday, June 17th at 7:00 pm. We will appoint a steering committee, set goals and take the first steps in forming a new Friends of the Summit Free Public Library. Please register to attend at the reference desk or by calling 908-273-0350 ext. 3.

The hot days of summer are the perfect time to check out your library with summer reading for kids and teens, movies for adults and English as a Second Language conversation groups meeting at the library. Check out our website at www.summitlibrary.org or call 908-273-0350 for information on all of the above programs and more.
The Summit Free Public Library is located at 75 Maple Street, Summit.
