June 8th, 2024 is Officially Summit Free Public Library Day

June 8th, 2024 is now officially Summit Free Public Library Day in the city of Summit. Mayor Elizabeth Fagan sealed the proclamation on June 5th, 2024, recognizing the Library’s service to the community. Read the full text of the proclamation below.

WHEREAS, the Summit Free Public Library has been a pillar of the community since the Summit Library Association was first formed 150 years ago in 1874; and

WHEREAS, the Library has long served as a trusted institution, striving to ensure equitable access to information and services for all members of the community; and

WHEREAS, the Library offers the opportunity for everyone to connect with others, learn new skills, and pursue their passions, no matter where they are on life’s journey; and

WHEREAS, the Library is an accessible and inclusive place that promotes a sense of local connection, advancing understanding, civic engagement, and shared community goals; and

WHEREAS, the Library has continued to adapt to the ever-changing needs of the City of Summit, developing and expanding collections, programs, and services that are as diverse as the population it serves; and

WHEREAS, the Library is a treasured institution that preserves our collective heritage and knowledge, safeguarding both physical and digital resources for present and future generations; and

WHEREAS, the Library is an essential public good and fundamental institution, working to improve society, protect the right to education and literacy, and promote the free exchange of information and ideas for all; and

WHEREAS, the Summit Free Public Library continues to embrace its mission – to inform, enrich, and inspire – thereby creating a thriving community for a better tomorrow.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that, I, Elizabeth Fagan, Mayor of the City of Summit do hereby proclaim June 8, 2024, as:




concluding the library’s anniversary celebration with festivities on the Village Green and urge everyone to utilize the vast number of resources and services offered by the Library and to thank the Library staff for all that they do to benefit the community.
