Parents and other caregivers (babysitters, au-pairs, nannies, grandparents) are babies’ and preschoolers’ first and best teachers. However, numerous research studies have found that many children begin kindergarten without the early literacy skills needed to learn to read. Attending library storytimes is a great way to prepare young children for reading. For this reason, this autumn, the library will host a series of Every Child Ready to Read workshops for children and their parents or caregivers to give everyone tips on encouraging the following five principles of early literacy: Talking, Singing, Reading, Writing, and Playing. Our list of Every Child Ready to Read programs are as follows:
Fun with Science and Math: (Ages 2-5, parents/caregivers):Wednesday, September 20 @10 AM: stories, interactive science and math activities for preschoolers, and skills and strategies for parents to help their children get ready to read.
Halloween Fun Workshop (Ages 2-5, parents/caregivers): Wednesday, October 25 @ 10-10:45 AM: Learn about the five early literacy practices with some interactive Halloween themed activities that parents and caregivers, and children can enjoy together.
Let’s learn the ABCs (Ages 2-5, parents): Wednesday, November 22, 2023 @ 10-10:45 am: Learn about the five early literacy practices, with some interactive activities that parents and caregivers can use to help children learn letter names and sounds.
Another great way to continue to foster the love of reading in your young child is to join our 1000 books before kindergarten program: You can read to your child in whichever language you prefer. For every 100 books you read together, stop by the library and show a librarian to receive a milestone sticker. We will move your child’s name down the timeline. You also get a chance to take photos to show how far you’ve come with your reading. Your child will also receive special incentives for reading 500 books and hitting the 1,000 book milestone.
All are encouraged to register and join us.
