From the Director – September 2024

Did you know you can borrow a pressure washer, visit the T-Rex at the American Museum of Natural History, or borrow a ukulele with your library card, all thanks to the Friends of the Summit Free Public Library?

I recently had the pleasure of attending a Friends of the Library board meeting where discussions revolved around their “Meet the Friends” open house coming up in October and the annual jewelry sale in November. This fun, friendly group all share the common goal of supporting and enhancing the Library’s mission by funding new programs and expanding its resources. On Tuesday, October 8, they are hosting a meet and greet at the Library, where anyone can learn about joining the Friends and all they do to raise money for the Library’s offerings, such as our museum passes or our unique Library of Things collection.

A major fundraiser for the group is their annual donated jewelry sale on November 16 and November 17. The Friends accept donations all year round of anything from colorful costume jewelry to sterling silver and 14k gold. Year after year, we are all amazed by what beautiful pieces are donated. If you’ve ever borrowed a free pass to the Guggenheim, Storm King, or the Turtle Back Zoo, your visit was funded by the Friends’ Jewelry Sale. Proceeds from the sale also allow us to expand our Library of Things collection. If you want to learn more about the Friends and how they help make your library shine, please stop by for coffee on October 8 at 10 am.

In other news, this September is Library Card Sign-up Month, when you can use your Summit Library card to get discounts at local businesses. More details are below!
