From the Director – June 2020

This entry has been published on July 18, 2020 and may be out of date.

As you know the library doors remain closed. We were hoping library service would have resumed a long time ago but unfortunately, that has not happened. Governor Murphy has indicated that library staff throughout the state can begin returning to buildings in stage 2 of New Jersey’s Road to Recovery so we are waiting for his announcement. Once the Governor announces that stage 2 businesses can start to open, we will ask patrons to return library materials to the book drops. With over 11,000 items checked out, it will take some time to quarantine and then check in library materials and return them to the shelves. During this initial period, library staff will start to prepare the building for modified library services. This will take one to two weeks. Limited curbside or lobby pickup of materials placed on hold will be available during this period.

Once the building is ready, the library will open for restricted access and possibly reduced hours for browsing and pick-up only. Patrons will be required to wear masks and practice social distancing. Library computers will not be available for public use. No toys or puzzles will be available in the children’s room. The number of people in the building will be limited. Patrons will not be allowed to linger in order to allow others to enter. There will be no programs or meetings allowed in the building. All programs will continue to be virtual.

As the Governor continues to loosen restrictions, the library will resume regular hours but will continue to require face masks, social distancing and limited attendance. It is expected that there will be no meetings or programs allowed in the building before September. On-site programming for small groups as per the Governor’s guidelines will hopefully begin in the fall.

Library services are still available with ebooks, eaudiobooks, videos, a rich assortment of databases for information, research and learning and a full complement of virtual programming at your fingertips through our website. Librarians are currently available Monday through Friday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm for telephone reference and to assist with use of the electronic resources. Keep an eye on the library’s Facebook page for program announcements and updates on opening.

I hope that we will be back providing in-person library service before the next newsletter. We look forward to welcoming our patrons back soon. Stay well.
