From the Director — December 2019

This entry has been published on January 5, 2019 and may be out of date.

After giving thanks for all we have on Thanksgiving, we enter the holiday season of giving. During this season we have three ways that you can help the Summit Library and some of our neediest Summit residents.

The Friends of the Summit Free Public Library are participating in #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this year’s event falls on December 3rd. The Friends of the Library work throughout the year to collect funds to support the extras that make our library special. The Friends of the Library have supported programs for children, lectures for adults, museum passes for the community, the brand new Library of Things and more. To donate to the Friends of the Summit Free Public Library, you may donate online here.

Each year at this time the Summit Library remembers those in our community who may be hungry with the annual food drive. Help check out hunger this holiday season with your donation of non-perishable food items to benefit Summit Helping its People (SHIP). The collection bin is conveniently located opposite the circulation desk and library staff will route 100% of the donations to Summit Helping its People (SHIP). Groceries most urgently needed are canned meat and fish; canned soups and stews; peanut butter (in plastic jars); boxed pasta and rice; powdered milk; infant formula; canned vegetables and fruits. The collection will run from November 25th through December 13th.

The Summit Library Foundation works to raise funds for capital projects and technology for the library. In 2015 the Foundation donated $25,000 to the renovation of the library’s children’s room, thereby saving the taxpayers the cost of the full renovation. They have also funded the purchase of furniture items and other major expenditures. The Summit Library Foundation has an Amazon Smile account that donates 0.5% of your Amazon Smile purchases to the Foundation. Register to donate to the Summit Free Public Library Foundation by clicking this link, enter Summit Free Public Library Foundation, and then forget about it. Shop as you always do on Amazon Smile and your purchases will automatically be credited to the Summit Library Foundation at no additional cost to you.

We know that there are many demands on your time and resources during the busy holiday season but your donation to the Friends of the Library, the Summit Library Foundation and the food drive will take only moments of your time and will benefit many in your community. The Library Board of Trustees and staff of the Summit Library wish you a wonderful holiday season and best wishes in the New Year.
