Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. It became an annual event held during the last week of September highlighting the importance of freedom to seek and express ideas, even the ones that some consider unorthodox or unpopular. You can find most of the books that have been challenged over the years in the Summit library collection.
