This year, the Summit Free Public Library joins our nation in celebrating America250, which commemorates 250 years since the birth of the United States. Thanks to a donation from the Beacon Fire chapter of the DAR, Summit Library cardholders can borrow a free pass to visit the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. The museum, which opened in 2017 on the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, tells the story of the American Revolution.
We also have some exciting programs in April to celebrate America250. On April 9, learn about early American toys from the educators from the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts. On April 10 and 24, students in the IDEAS program at Franklin Elementary will help us learn about local battles from the Revolutionary War. On April 18, Pat Wells of History Is Speaking will talk about all the places in NJ where Washington slept, presented in partnership with the Summit Historical Society. On April 23, professional storyteller Carol Simon Levin will portray Catharine “Caty” Greene, the indomitable wife of Nathanael Greene, one of Gen. George Washington’s most valued officers and a good friend to many other revolutionary notables.
The Library has several programs planned to celebrate America250 leading up to the 250th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026. We hope you’ll join us as we commemorate this momentous occasion.
