As the Library celebrates its 150th anniversary, we will be highlighting other organizations that also have long histories in Summit.
The Connection, founded in 1922 by women of Summit, has served the community for over a century. Originally a YWCA chapter, it became independent in 1998, allowing it to tailor its programs to Summit’s specific needs. Now simply “The Connection,” it offers programs for everyone from children to seniors, with financial aid to ensure inclusivity. The organization partners with other Summit institutions and offers unique programs like ESL classes and Pathways, a support system for women with cancer.
The Connection has recently hired Chris Bonner, its first male director, and it welcomes residents from neighboring towns. Scholarships and financial aid ensure everyone can participate in its programs. This commitment to inclusivity has fostered a strong sense of community, with generations of families benefiting from The Connection’s services.
In 2022 “The Connection” celebrated a century of service and launched The Connection Centennial Campaign: The Foundation of Our Future, which aims to expand its scholarship program, establish an endowment, and create accessible playgrounds. As Chris Bonner says, “The Connection exists for everyone,” and it strives to continue serving Summit for another hundred years.
