New Library Director
The Board of Trustees of the Summit Free Public Library has announced the selection of Susan Permahos as the library's new Director effective March 4th. Mrs. Permahos has served as the Director of the Springfield Free Public Library for almost 20 years. She started her library career at The New York Public Library (NYPL) while attending college. After earning her Master of Library Service degree from Rutgers University, she returned to the NYPL where she served in a number of positions over a period of eight years. Before assuming the Directorship at the Springfield Library, Mrs. Permahos served as the Director of the Elmwood Park Public Library in Bergen County and as Assistant Director of the Essex- Hudson Regional Library Cooperative.
Mrs. Permahos has steered the Springfield Library through a period of startling change in public library service. When she assumed the position in 1993, the library had a single computer that ran on a 5 ¼ inch floppy disk. The library is now home to more than 60 computers, the card catalog has been replaced by an online computer catalog, LP records have been replaced by compact disks and downloadable music and library programs are announced on Facebook and Twitter. She has overseen more than a half a million dollars in building renovations and received more than $400,000.00 in grant funds for library programs and improvements.
Mrs. Permahos is looking forward to new challenges as she assumes her position at the Summit Library. She hopes to conduct a customer service survey, develop a long range plan, increase programming and exhibits for residents of all ages, increase library communication with the community through the use of social media and become an active member of the Summit community.
